About your department

1. Please tell us why you chose this department.

I have wanted to be a hotel concierge since I was in junior high school. Guests encounter various situations in a hotel. A hotel concierge is someone who solves the requests and problems of guests staying at a hotel. They read the "voice" that is not always expressed and respond flexibly, and sometimes they even try to plan surprises.
I believe that what is required is marketing-related skills such as analytical ability (ability to grasp needs) and creativity (ability to plan something). Department of Commercial Sciences offers lectures on marketing theory and consumer behavior theory, as well as seminars where you can put the theories you learn into practice. I chose this department because I wanted to take advantage of the opportunity of university life to cultivate the knowledge and skills necessary for a hotel concierge.

2. Please tell me what you are studying in this department.

  • Of course, it's marketing. Department of Commercial Sciences has a course model that focuses on "product development, advertising, and sales," all of which are deeply related to marketing. In the hotel business, the product is "accommodation services." This is what we study as the subject of product development, advertising, and sales.
In addition, Department of Commercial Sciences encourages students to obtain qualifications and provides thorough support. One of the qualifications students can aim for is the Financial Planning Technician. This is a financial concierge for life planning!

What I learned from studying in this department

1. What did you find rewarding or particularly interesting about your job?

This is a crowdfunding project that we worked on in our seminar. This activity was a valuable opportunity to put into practice what we learn in our textbooks, with the support of outside business people who are active in the business world. The product I planned, Strakey (a leather key case), has been commercialized.
We started by coming up with ideas, then made prototypes and presented the results. I felt it was worthwhile to go through the process of thinking things through, paying particular attention to each detail. The ideas were refined through mutual comments from the seminar students, received guidance from the professor, and were subjected to rigorous evaluation by business operators. Fortunately, we received the go-ahead and the product was put on the market. The number of supporting purchases reached triple digits, and I realized that my efforts had been accepted by society.

2. Please tell us about how you have grown, including any specific examples.

In fact, the thing I put the most effort into throughout this activity was creating Straky's internet page. The success of crowdfunding depends on the appeal of the product as well as the promotion to attract supporters. This requires different skills from product planning, and the workload has increased dramatically.
So I gathered new members in the seminar. In the promotion, I was particular about the photos to be put on the page, but I also experienced the position of managing the team as a leader. Once I started, it gradually became fun, and I took more than 1,000 photos in total. However, I did not only take photos, but also tried to reflect the special skills and individuality of the team members in the page creation, such as product explanations, naming, and coming up with catchphrases.
Through these experiences, I was able to demonstrate leadership skills by working with each member individually and achieving results as a team.
