[Message from Student Counseling Center]

Feel free to come to our office whenever you need to.

There is a saying that goes, "things have to be discussed."
There is also a saying that "three heads are better than one."
Some students may feel embarrassed about coming to the counseling room, but that is not the case at all.
People always consult with others to get things done. If you think about it alone, you will always end up going around in circles. Please feel free to come and consult with us to break this cycle.
You might be surprised to see that you should have thought about it that way.

Take your time and don't rush

Students in the midst of adolescence have endless worries.
The developmental challenges of adolescence are quite difficult.
There are many challenges ahead, including choosing a career, choosing a spouse, and of course financial independence.
Most students face this problem, and anyone would feel alone and helpless in the face of such a challenge.
And then, when you realize that there's no other way, you become desperate.
It's hard to think of this as just one stage in your life. Why not sit down and talk to us?
It can be about your studies, your love life, your friends, anything. But you have to solve it by yourself.
A counselor can only help you along the way.

It is through worries that people grow

There is no one who is free of worries, and no one has a life like that.
No one wants to live such a dull life. People have worries, but they somehow manage to come to terms with them.
No matter how healthy a person may seem, someday, somewhere, they will face serious problems.
It's always better to be young when it comes to coming to terms with your worries.
The age at which students are now is the perfect time to start worrying about becoming an adult.
This leads to personal growth. Even if you try to ignore your worries now, they will surely come back to haunt you in the future.
It's fine to just chat, so please feel free to knock on the door of Student Counseling Center anytime.

Talk to your parents if necessary

The heart is made by the family.
Even if you don't realize it, it is created in the home.
Let me tell you a secret. To mom and dad, their children are a continuation of themselves.
You may have had the experience of being scolded by your parents so emotionally and harshly over something that was nothing. It is because the parents saw in their child their own shortcomings or the things their parents used to say to them when they were young.
That's why I get so emotional. Parents are human beings too, so they have their own strengths and weaknesses.
Therefore, by occasionally opening up to your child about various things, mutual understanding can progress. Parents also need to grow.
There is a saying that goes, "Parents are born at the same time as children, and children and parents raise them together."
Of course, there are people who absolutely do not want their parents to know, so with the individual's consent, we will help create a space for family discussion.

Knowing yourself through others

What students with serious problems have in common is loneliness.
I often find myself wondering, "What is so fun about other people that they are laughing so much? What is so fun about being alive?"
But humans cannot live alone. Humans are written as "Hito no ma" (people among people). People give us warm looks and smiles.
Being able to feel the warmth of another person's heart, whether that be through talking to them, a tap on the shoulder, or holding their hand, is what nourishes our lives.
Furthermore, people can only see themselves through their relationships with others.
Other people are your mirror. It is the courage to look at yourself in that mirror that will help you grow.

The secret will never be revealed to anyone else.

Counselling is not a lecture.
It is you who lead the discussion, not the counselor.
The important thing is to talk openly about everything, even the things you least want to talk about.
"Speaking is letting go." You'll be amazed at how much easier it can be.
The premise of any story like this is, of course, that the secret will never be leaked to anyone else.
Some students worry that their information will be leaked to the university and they will be put at a disadvantage, but Student Counseling Center is an independent entity within the university. There is no need to worry. Counseling can only be provided if privacy is respected. Please feel free to visit.

About requesting consideration

To all students who are experiencing anxiety or difficulties in their studies due to developmental or mental disabilities

We provide "reasonable accommodation" (※1) to students who feel anxiety or difficulty in their studies due to developmental or mental disabilities, by removing the social barriers that cause such anxiety or difficulty when taking classes, so that they can take classes on an equal basis with other students. You can convey your request to the instructor by submitting a "Request for Accommodation" that lists the specific accommodations you would like to make. Based on the concept of "reasonable accommodation," the university and the student will discuss the accommodations based on the student's request and provide appropriate support for taking classes. Please note that this does not mean that you are requesting accommodations such as changes to the course goals, learning content, or evaluation criteria.

*1 According to the Act on the Elimination of Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities, when a student with a disability expresses a desire to continue studying, and the university does not impose an excessive burden on the student to remove the difficulty, the university will make efforts to resolve the difficulty through adjustments to the student's surroundings, etc., which is referred to as "reasonable accommodation."

Support Eligibility

Students who need to have social barriers removed from their studies due to developmental or mental disabilities, who wish to receive support, and whose need for support has been recognized by the university.

*If you have any requests regarding special considerations for physical disabilities such as hearing or visual impairments, please contact Academic Affairs Division Office.

support

[Examples of reasonable accommodation]

  • Information regarding assignment submissions, exam scope, etc. should be communicated visually as well as verbally.
  • When giving instructions or explanations, avoid ambiguity and be as specific as possible.
  • In order to reduce mental stress, students will be allowed to sit in seats that are most comfortable for them during the class.
  • Recording lectures and taking photographs of notes and slides are permitted.
  • If you are feeling unwell, you will be permitted to enter or leave the classroom during class without permission from the teacher in charge of the class.
  • Students are allowed to take medication and drink fluids during class.

About the application

First, please contact the Communication Lounge and make an appointment for an interview. After the coordinator meets with the student who applied, the specific considerations will be discussed from the perspective of reasonable accommodation. Please note that reasonable accommodation does not include lowering course goals or evaluation standards, in order to ensure the quality of learning.

STEP 1 Inquiry (book an interview)

STEP 2: Interview with the coordinator (a two-way interview with the student or a three-way interview with the student and parent/guardian)

STEP 3: Discuss with relevant departments within the university and decide on the details of the request for consideration

STEP 4: The student confirms the decision regarding the accommodation request

STEP 5: Distribute the request for accommodations to the instructor and relevant departments

STEP 6: Providing support based on requests for consideration

*Documents required for application: "Medical certificate" or "Document equivalent to a medical certificate" (issued within the last 3 months)
If you have a disability certificate, please bring it with you.

*If you wish to continue receiving academic support, you will need to apply for the same program each semester (first and second semester) in order to receive appropriate support.

Communication Lounge

This is a consultation and support desk for any problems you may have during your university life.

If you are having trouble with your student life, please come and talk to us. We are a support desk to reduce or resolve academic difficulties, mainly communication difficulties, such as not being able to make friends or having trouble getting along with classmates. We also provide support to those who are experiencing difficulties or anxiety in their studies due to disabilities or illnesses (about applying for a "request for consideration"). Let's think together about what we can do to enrich our student life.
